My first post and vid! STS88 landing at KSC.
« on: January 05, 2008, 09:12:29 PM »
G'day!  Here's my opening post on the forum and my first video.

Loving the sim so far!

Anyway, it's a collection of four 30 second clips (I'm using the unregistered version of FRAPS...) joined together.  The landing ain't quite centre-line, but after the clip ends, I do manage to force the nose-wheel to the ground and steer it back on course!   ;D

There's also no sound in the video.

Actually, I must confess - I cheated a bit!  It is actually clips from two attempts.  The first three sections are from one attempt, but then I bodged the landing and crashed, so replayed it to capture the actual landing...   :-[

EDIT:
*ahem* - helps if I post the link...   :-[

Nice! Here is some advice to relieve you of some workload:

1. You can use the keyboard shortcuts to activate the Gear, Chute and Jettison.
2. You can use D to declutter the HUD to show/hide the rwy overlay or "clean" it to see the runway better.
3. Right/Left click and hold on the Brightness knob to increase/decrease the HUD intensity to match your preference.

This will let you concentrate more on the landing and less on the mouse <g>.

Other than that - coo1 !

Q: can you explain here how you got such a nice video resolution and smooth fps on YouTube? In which format did you save and what settings so that people here know how to do it as well as you did? maybe you can also tell us which tool you used to transcode the Fraps source?

Thanks for the tips.  I keep meaning to go back to the manual to see what the keys are - I already use the one for the landing gear, but yeah, it would be easier to do the other things with the keyboard too!

At the time I recorded the video, I realised I was a little off-centre, so almost all of my attention was on trying to get it back on track, so I forgot to do things like decluttering the HUD!   ;D

I only registered an account on Youtube today to upload the video, so I don't know a great deal about it, but reading some info about file formats, I saw that .wmv files don't normally translate so well on YT, so I was surprised it came out so well, to be honest!!!

I used the unregistered version of FRAPS, with the option set to capture at half-size, 25fps, then put the clips into Windows Movie Maker, joined them together, added some transitions and titles, then saved the movie file as "Video for broadband (340 Kbps)" (320x240px, 25fps, 340Kbps) .wmv format and uploaded that to YT.

THAT is exactly what people here need to know. I'll copy this section and make it a sticky. THANKS!

You're welcome.   :)

Could it be that it kept the picture quality because there was no sound in the clip?

Here's my second video - STS-1 launch, made exactly the same way as the last one:

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=f4HgFQAGR3I

I'm still not getting any sound in my recordings, so I don't know if it's because it's the unregistered version of FRAPS (but I used it a couple of years ago for something else and got sound in that!), or whether it's due to the settings...

Good point!  I forgot to put the SSM2007 prefix on the title.  Done now.   ;D

Nice landings!

By the way, Admin, STS-88 was a night landing. Endeavour landed at 10.52 p.m. EST, Dec. 15 1998. I've seen footage from that landing and I can assure you it was dark.

I've also noted that the STS-116 landing scenario takes place in daylight, even though Discovery touched down right at sunset on that flight. STS-121 I see is a night landing in the sim, but that flight ended with a daylight landing, with Discovery touching down at 9.14 a.m. which in late July would be a definite daylight landing. I also remember it quite vividly as a daylight landing since it was the first shuttle flight I followed closely.
