Read the Docking chapter in the Commander's Ref. Man. It hints to the proper approach speed <g>
As a rule of thumb, the approach speed (in the sim) should be @1% of the distance in feet. For example, between 100' and 90', the speed should be below 1fps. Between 50' and 40' it should be below 0.5fps and so on. The recommended final approach speed during the last 1' should be 0.01fps.
Overall, the approach velocities we check for in the sim are higher than in real life simply because we don't want to force anybody to spend so much time on this maneuver, but if you want to be closer to reality, why don't you do the approach at 0.1 - 0.01 fps from 100' down to docking
My routine docking speeds start at 0.1fps between 100' and 30' and then 0.01fps until contact. That's roughly 1 hour!
