My thoughts...
« on: December 16, 2007, 02:51:41 PM »
I'd like to take a minute to offer my thoughts on your project. Ever since I was a kid (about 4 or 5), I have been obsessed with all things flight. I have a huge collection of flying-related stuff. Books, pictures, models, trinkets, even Christmas decorations. I remember going out with my Dad to our local airport and sitting for hours and hours watching the planes take off and land. The observation deck was partially enclosed with glass, but they left a gap at the top and the bottom that allowed ALL the sounds and smells of the planes to come in. I remember the ear-shattering whine of the jet engines spooling up and the distinct smell of the fuel (it usually made my dad ill, but it was like pure oxygen to me). I remember buying one of the first models of personal computers to come out. The first program I had? Microsoft Flight Simulator, of course. I remember our whole school stopped everything to watch the first shuttle launch. I could hardly contain my excitment when I saw it. We would always stop any and all school activities to watch a launch live. I remember when the first shuttle exploded shortly after take off. I cried. Not just for the astronauts, but strangly, for the shuttle as well. Life went on, and so did my obsession with flight. Thousands of dollars spent on add-ons and other hardware, as any proper "simmer" would do. :) Life got in the way, and until a few years ago, I had never even set foot in an airplane of any kind. Well, not one that was working at least. A few years ago, my wife blessed me with the biggest surprise I would ever get aside from my children. I got to take a flight in a Cessna 172, and not just fly in it, I got to FLY IT!! Through the proper instruction from a CFI, I had control of the airplane from take off to landing. They say flight simulator might actually harm you when it comes to real flying. BAH! Even the instructor commented how well I did. I still don't think he believed me when I told him that it was the first time my feet had ever left the ground aside from jumping into the air. I credit MSFS 2004 and Flight One (for their Excellent C172) for helping me that day. What's my point, and what does all of this have to do with your Space Shuttle? I wanted any and all readers to try and remember the excitment of their very first flight, or how they felt when they saw the shuttle blast off for the first time. This is the same excitment I feel when I watch your video trailers. I'm not a pilot, nor am I an astronaut, but now I get to be one thanks to your hard efforts. I have the latest offering from Microsoft/Aces, but almost never play with it. I invested SOOOO much into fs9, it would be a real shame to throw away all that hard work. Plus, my fs9 looks nearly as good as fsx. I haven't purchased a single add-on for FSX yet. The way it's looking now, your shuttle package will likely be the only add-on I ever purchase. All of this is to say, keep up the good work. There are many of us out here who will appreciate your work more than mere words will ever be able to describe. I get to be a kid again and fly into space! How cool is that!?

:)

That was a cool reading Doc. Thanks for sharing, and you should know that I also share your love and excitement for anything that flies and own the entire MSFS collection and many 1000s of $ behind it! I really know that "Kerosene is Oxygene for me" feeling. I still get that feeling whenever I sit in a C172 or B747 (as a passenger).

I have to make sure you understand though that Space Shuttle Mission 2007 is NOT an add-on to anything.

It is a stand-alone Space Shuttle Mission simulator and it does not need anything else to run.

SSM was a dream for us ever since Virgin Games original Shuttle game back in '92. Now, 15 years later, we are here, with our own dreams lifting-off with many friends aboard. Happy to see you aboard too :)

Best regards,

Thank you docweston for this story!

SSM2007 will allow us to reach the stars, it will allow us to go higher, faster than any aircraft. In an airplane at night, you can look upward, move your arm and tried to touch the stars but you are too low. With SSM2007 you'll can touch them.

Many people here come like me from Virgin Shuttle of 91, this simulator that made me love all flying machines. All my passion has for point of origin this simulator.

Thank Exciting Simulation for accepting the challenge that many publisher did not dare to accept!

Say Doc,

Have you considered building a home cockpit for the FS9?

I'm so sorry for not answering until now. One of the many downfalls of my profession. Not too much time spent at home. I didn't know it was a stand alone until a little while ago. I don't know what lead me to believe it was an add-on for Microsoft Flight Sim X. Even better! Stand-alone programs of this type are usually WAY better than any add-on could ever be. You're not limited by the core simulator code. You can reach out and program a much more realistic experience.

I'm sorry to say, I've never heard of this Virgin Shuttle program. However, back in 1991 I was ONLY interested in Microsoft Flight Sim. Well, that wasn't my ONLY interest, but most of the other things I was in to were illegal.  ;)

Yeah, I've considered a home cockpit, but I don't have the time, money, or space for something like that right now. Plus, if I can invest a few thousand in a project for a computer-based game, why not go for broke and do it for real?! And yes, it would cost ME a few thousand. I'm a little OCD and everything I do has to be nearly perfect. It usually isn't perfect, but I keep going into eternity until I get "it" as close to perfect as I can, or get tired of trying and switch to something else to obsess over. Also, I like flying all kinds of different planes. Cessnas, Boeings, Military (WWII and modern) and all types of GA. Heck, I even found a little company in Hayes, KS called Rans Aircraft that make a really nice "ultralight". You can even add a glass panel to it. It looks like fun. AND.... What good would a Cessna cockpit do me when trying to lift-off in the space shuttle?  :D

Again, sorry it took so long. Now that the Christmas season is dying down, I'll try to be quicker in my responses.

Great story doc. I like to fly airplanes to. I want to get my privite pilot licens when I get old enough. But for now I still get to play MSFS and in less then 24 hours I will get to fly the Space Shuttle in SSM. So I am happy. Happy orbiting. ;D ;D

I will be getting my pilot License sometime in 2008. I've had a passion for flying ever since i went on my first plane ride in 1995. My dad was a pilot in the USAF in the early eighties and i have two uncles that work around planes one is an engineer at Boeing and the other is the CEO of an airline. I'm 16 years old so i may go for a student pilot license in early 2008. I hope to be an astronaut someday so i am thinking about going to the naval academy and getting a degree in Aerospace engineering and be a test pilot and apply to be a pilot astronaut. I'll be graduating high school in 2010 so i have a couple more years.

Sounds like you have a good start. I'm still trying to get a job with NASA as a computer technician. The best I do right now is subcontracted to IBM... Slowly getting there.

I'm sure it will. Just work hard at school. By the time you've left school and completed further education, you could be travelling on to the Moon and building outposts there. You younger generation are our (The Worlds) future.  ;)
