Just catching up
« on: January 23, 2018, 08:11:30 PM »
Hi all,

I've been away from SSM for a while due to work etc and have just got back to playing it (if thats the right term) and yet again going through the missions has been an absolute pleasure and for a Sim which is 10 years old that is amazing!.

Having read up on the notes and forum it was great to see that you are developing a SSM2 and wow! your doing it with full time jobs as well, that I know is very stressful and time consuming especially if you have families and social stuff to do as well.

Having looked at the screen shots and videos,  the version 2 looks awesome and as many on here know this is by far the best space simulation software many of us have seen and i've played most of them starting with Rendezvous: a space shuttle simulation, Space Shuttle: A Journey into Space and Project Space Station back in the early 80s (Yes ive been playing and writing games that long and probably longer).

Really looking forward to version 2 and hopefully we will see it soon-ish time permitting and in the mean time i'm going to finish off SSM2007.

Keep up the great work

Hi Macapple,

Never seen that shuttle computer game before.  I see the game designer/programmer for Rendezvous, Wes Huntress, worked at JPL and later went on to become NASA Associate Administrator for Space Science.

Based on that background, my guess is that it was probably a fairly accurate (for the time) shuttle simulator.

In the early 1990s, Virgin Games released a shuttle simulator.
I played it on the Commodore Amiga 500+ with 2MB (!!!) of RAM.
The game used three 3,5" floppydiscs plus one for the gamesave.
The cross section of the shuttle was hexagonal.

Yeah I have the pc version of Shuttle and was just came across the poster a couple of days ago when organizing my computer area.  I don’t think I ever made it through all the missions in that game, but it I thought there was some kind of major bug that made it difficult to complete the missions.  Maybe sometime I will try and load up on dosbox and try and run it again.

Yes, I never did it to dock the satellite to the space station.
From the mission it did not go on in the game.
The worst part of the game was the intro music.
A cool mission was the Enterpise on the Boeing 747. This was a good intruction for learn to landing the Shuttle.

I was here back in the day when we first got started. Sad to see the standstill. Ten years ago this place was alive -- Uri_ba leading the way.

You are missed SSM.

I was a bit late to the party so to speak.  I came on board about 8 years ago.  It was still pretty active at that point though.  I’ve been off and on the forum here over the years, but it’s been many years since I’ve done any missions until lately.  I’m rerunning through all the missions in order (on STS-47 now).  Hopefully I will get through all them this time.

Wow. I haven't seen screen shots of "Shuttle in some time. I loved that sim. Funny how realistic I thought it looked then, lol. When I found SSM07, I was blown away at how similar it was. better in every way, of course but I never thought I'd see another Space Shuttle Sim. Fast forward 11 years(!) and I've gone though all the missions now on my 5th go around. This time I had been incorporating FSX in to "fly" crews to and from Elington and Patrick AFB and flying missions in RT. It adds a little more spice to it.

I thought I'd be getting my hands on SSM2 before I finish this round...just wrapped up sts-117... but I think it's another year or more away. So, round six coming up!, lol. This time around I might only start missions on the dates they did. Anniversary flights, you might call them. Either way, still wanting to get into this aging sim and enjoying the sights and the feel is a testament to the fine programming and love that went into making it. I know I'll be going multiple rounds with SSM2 long after it's 11th or 12th Anniversary. Keep plugging away and thank you!

I just finished STS-117 a couple days ago myself.  Working on STS-122 now.  next go around will be to do them all in hard mode.  I'm updating Michael's checklists as I go to prep for the hard mode.

After that I want to do at least one mission without using time skip or next event. I probably will pick one of the satellite launching missions as that would have some good high earth orbit views of earth to watch while passing the time.

A real time mission sounds like fun, but I think real life events would prevent me from ever completing a mission that way.  Would hate to get most of the way through one just to blow it due to a real life time conflict.

Finally I want to experiment around a bit with the SCOM and various shuttle procedure documents kind of in a sandbox mode with SSM2007 to test out and learn about some of the various shuttle systems.
