First Completed Mission (STS-1)
« on: June 25, 2008, 06:45:48 PM »
Okay, I bought the SSM2007 back in the first week it was released (was it six months ago!), and I've only just flown my first mission, start to end. However, it was flown in Real time, with saves for sleeping, work, eating and other family concerns. It basically took me 2 weeks of any spare time I could find to complete STS-1! In general I'm impressed with the Sim. The Track IR (i'm using FreeTrack) plug-in makes it better to control and select panels (IMHO). I'm also playing with the idea of getting Matrox Triple Head but that's going to be a Christmas present that I'm not supposed to know about ;)

All in all, a good Simulator to show the grand-kids in the Post Space Shuttle era.

Hats off desktopsimmer! I guess that real Astronauts would find a save/load option handy too, eh?  :D

Yes :) especially if the other half want some DIY jobs completed ;) Whilst waiting between burns, I had plenty of time read the SCOM.pdf manual, interesting read, but its dated (pre-MEDS).

Congrats, desktopsimmer!  I can relate to the CEO/CFO/COO requiring chores to be completed...that, plus working full time plus going to school full time...come to think of it, I'm surprised I have time to be breathing currently.  *sigh*  No one said being an astronaut was easy!

Thx, breathing, I'll do that when I'm dead, as I don't have enough time when alive :) However, I have a rare opportunity, a complete day to myself! Now the question is do I.....

a) Paint the Bedroom Doors and frames and some house work
b) If the weather is good, do some real life gliding :)
c) Do a lot of housework, that will take up most of my 'free' day
d) Do 'some' housework and with time advances and skips have a go at STS-80

YAY just completed STS-1 myself... Love the sim, obviously a lot of work has gone into making it an accurate and enjoyable experience. Having migrated from "the other sim" I found having an unpowered landing far more challenging... I must have reloaded at least 20 times from having saved at "On at the ninety". Was much easier having mastered the HUD, and after having stopped being lazy and plugged my joystick in!

/Cheer for not burning up in re-entry... Looking forward to the next mission... Dying to start work on the ISS!

Welcome to the club MECO and congrats on your first mission. Seeing that you've tried 20 landings until you got it right, I can safely say that patience, practice and perseverance is not something you're lacking. This is the right stuff to be successful at the other SSM2007 missions that await you.

See you on orbit!

Well it seemed like 20 landings... Approach at 310kts following what I thought at the time was the ILS glideslope indicator but that gave me completely the wrong attitude and sink rate. That combined with flaring too late or too early caused me to crash... Soooo frustrating... Even ended up reading the full commanders manual just in case.

What did it in the end were the gr8 instructional videos!!

The ground comes up thick and fast which caused me to flare too early. Playing 'chicken' with the Earth after a perfectly successful mission, to fail right at the very end is very frustrating. I'm sure with practice, landings will become easier...

Thanks for the welcome!  ;D

Well done, m8.
I too recently joined the ranks and completed STS 1 and 8. Although being more of a flightsimmer this sim made me a spacenut in mere days. I just have one problem with the product. Which is this....
I hate procedural sims.
Space flight is a lot of boring procedures.
I switch and press buttons.... a lot.
Than WHY is it soooo compelling, fun, rewarding, interesting, educational, sensational... in short, I am awestruck by the design of this sim. Superb job. The fact I can complete a mission in many days is wonderful. Graphics are so well done.
Compared to many flightsims, a mission in this sim is a Mission with a capital M.
A labour of love this product is. I too had to practise landings a zillion times taking it on the ninety.
And than we are spoilt with new patches and missions for free...
One minor minor thingy: given the amount of time and effort going into the learning curve there are two moments in this sim which I find slightly disappointing;
mission ending on the runway or the loss of a shuttle... a wee bit 'empty'.

And than, regarding the chores; when putting the bin out I reframe it as an EVA :-)

Correction: it is not ME saying that there are 1,000 registered forum members. It is the forum counter who "says" it <g>.
