Most of the RMS work is in fact automated. The OBSS-scans are fully automated and most of the work on the station is also done automatically. For instance, on STS-123 an automatic sequence got the JLP almost to the docked position. They stopped it a few meters out and the RMS-operators took it in manually. Often it's automatic sequences when they have astronauts on the end of the station arm as well. Christer Fuglesang noted the arm moved much smoother when the other crewmembers moved him around than when it was automated.
