Title: FRAPS + TripleHead2Go - good and bad news!
Post by: Admin on May 19, 2008, 07:06:12 PM
I've been experimenting with FRAPS capture from a TripleHead2Go setup and I am happy to report that FRAPS is able to capture the extra-wide video on three screens without any problems (at least the registered version of FRAPS).

The captured movie will play on any PC with the free FRAPS installed (it needs the FRAPS driver), but here comes the bad news: I couldn't find a video editor able to edit the extra-wide, non-standard capture. Each one will squeeze the video to a 4:3 or 16:9 format - hardly exciting.

Nevertheless, the three-screen wide video is amazing. Maybe I'll post it somehow but because the fact that I cannot edit or transcode it to compressed video, one minute takes about 1GB! That is a problem.

What is the size of the screen capture?  I imagine it's huge, but...

Also, can you convert the video?  I've got a program called SUPER that will convert almost anything to almost anything.  I'm not sure about FRAPS, as I've never used it, but it might be worth a shot...?

Well, it is quite big - the max Triplehead2Go can move: 3840x1024. Extreme High Definition video anyone? LOL!

and the AVI Cinepack codec ? I tried with Media Studio Pro and I that codec worked on 3840x1024 !

Did you try Adobe Premiere? I can't test it right now, as my screen and or GPU are still acting up (repairs are due this week, laptop doesn't have enough power to run Premiere), but IIRC, it can handle any resolution you want.

This is not a problem with a software like Premier, but the Codec ! Some codecs settings are not flexible.

Again, that work with AVI Cinepack codec...

A+

Never had any problems with codecs either... I could use DivX, XviD, WMV, ... in any resolution I wanted iirc.

Admin,

Were you ever able to edit this footage?  If not, let me know.  I'll need to check some of the resolution and output attributes of my production system (broadcast NLE), but I may be able to help.

Nope! It distorts the aspect ratio to whatever the editing suite "knows". Either 16:9 or 4:3.

OK.  I'll contact my technical support.  There is a separate component with the system that I rarely use, designed to alter the aspects of the digital media outside of the NLE.

For instance, I am able to convert the video format from NTSC to European PAL scan-rate, then import the resulting file into the NLE for normal editing. The resulting file, when encoded, then allows for the output of a PAL video or DVD. It may be possible to adjust aspect ratio to a non-standard output.

Which editing suite are you using?

Leitch DPSVelocity - now produced by Harris Corp.

I'll be back in my studio before the day is out on some production work. If I have a moment this afternoon, I'll send an inquiry down to their support staff.

Did you try to edit TH2Go 3-monitors FRAPS footage as well?

No. I don't have FRAPS at this point, though I will probably download a copy over the coming weekend and give it a try.

I will probably never have TripleHead2Go - I wouldn't even have space (currently) in my home for such a setup.  I can certainly see where it would be wonderful to have, but it would be a lot of expense for a small amount of my computer use.

What I would like to try is see if I can aid in your editing and encoding situation, providing you with a great online tool for sharing what the sim and TripleHead can do.
