Title: OLD Space shuttle games
Post by: jjknap on November 26, 2007, 09:17:54 AM
I remember buying a 386 computer wiith ega (16 color) graphics just to play that sim.  You had to have 2 floppy drives in order to play as well:)  Shuttle by Virgin was a good sim too, but SSM 2007 looks fantastic! I am really looking forward to it ;D

Of course SSM2007 will be REALLY and INFINITELY better (visually and technically) than Shuttle by Spectrum Holobyte and the one by Vektor Graphics (aka as Virgin Games).

I didn't play with Shuttle from Spectrum Holobyte ... I have to try with Dosbox just to check what I missed when I was young... :-)

Ps : This is the second post regarding the old space sims and maybe it could be great to have an oldies section here on the forum to speak about those games (unofficially off course)... Virgin Shuttle and Spectrum Holobyte Shuttle was not the only space sims ... I still playing with Buzz Aldrin's Race Into Space (CD Version) and Space Max... Don't miss Microsoft Space Simulator too...

I spent too many hours on THAT one :). I just loved that 2001 Space Odyssey-style Space Station! MSSS came on way too many diskettes though - lol.

A friend of mine had the Microsoft version. The one thing I remember about it, it was on 5 or 6 3.5 diskettes. ;D

Race Into Space wasn't really a simulation, it was a strategy game.

Yes I know but a unique great strategy game talking about space conquest and very realistic!

Virgin / VectorGrafix Shuttle, I still use that, got a few bug in it, but still fun. BTW at the dos prompt type Shuttle -all you'l have all the mission available!

Another sim that was 'Challenging' was Precision Approach by AMTEX, even though it was only the HAC and landing phases, it was a good attempt at simulating the landing. the half decent link I could find was this one:

On this topic, how could anyone forget Sierra's old Space Quest series?! Sure, not really a "simulation," but rather a fun satirical look at the future of space and science fiction.

I still have fond memories of a flying jock strap and the Bjorn!

I loved the Simulator from virgin games also; spent many hours running the missions though I never got to the end. Had to move and sell my 386 PC. By the time I had bought a new 486 computer in 1995 and looked to buy MS Space Simulator, I couldn't find it in stores anymore; wonder why.  I'd still love to look at it. If anyone knows where I can get a copy, I'd be grateful. Also can anyone give me the site for the DOS emulator?

the best DOS Emulator is : DOSBox and you can find it here :

http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/

For a better accessibility, you should use a front end like DOG (you can find it on the download page of dosbox)

I myself think DOG is an god-awful frontend for DOSBox, I myself don't use frontends anymore.. It's a real shame the guy who did the DFend frontend decided to stop development, it was by far the easiest and most user-friendly frontend out there.

Agree, Dfend was better but DOG is not so bad and work on Vista...
I don't want to loose my time with typing on the prompt DOS ...

Does DOG work flawlessly with the latest DOSBox? Do you know?

I still have the one by Virgin, original box, manual and on 3.5 disk, I wonder if the cockpit/flightdeck chart from that game will be useful in this new one. I am looking forward to buying this on the 25th if I can find a spot in the download line-hope its not too busy! :)

No use. SSM has the NEW panels layout and instrumentation and more panels than the Virgin Games oldie.
