Title: Video Card
Post by: jmorlando on November 15, 2007, 07:58:23 PM
Can anyone tell me how much of a difference I'm going to see since i have an NVIDIA 8500 rather than an 8600.  Do i really need to go buy another card?

If you want to estimate anything, check the graphic performance websites like www.guru3d.com and see how they compare cards performance. If for example the 8500 is on the average slower than our recommended cards, you can assume that the performance you'll get from SSM will be also slower than what we publish. That of course also depends on the motherboard, RAM,CPU etc. so as you see, it is impossible for anybody to give you any educated speculation. Sorry.

Also read our Hardware FAQ for more info.

We also recommend not to buy any upgrade at this stage. Run the game and see if it performs as you want. If not, then consider an upgrade.

thanks.  I really appreaciate you taking the time to answer.  My system exceeds all the other recommendations so I won't lose too much sleep on performance and will play it all by ear.

Thanks again.

No sweat. IF you plan to do any graphics card upgrade anyway in the near future I can recommend the newly-released 8800GT 512MB. Judging by several independent tests, it offers around 10% performance less than the 8800GTX for 50% of the price - THAT is value for money. It also leaves the 8800GTS in the dust and the 8800GTS is @30% more expensive than the 8800GT.

I've already ordered a unit, just in case  ;D

I must emphasize that you do NOT need an 8800GT to run SSM2007 with all the options up, but if you are at a crossroads anyway, then it is sensible to buy the best card you can afford and today, the 8800GT seems to be that card.

I've updated the Hardware FAQ to cover this question :)

yes, the 8800GT is most powerful than a 8800GTS and a bit bellow the GTX/Ultra series BUT with an excellent price!! about 250euros here in France!
