Suggestion for SSM2
« on: January 13, 2015, 04:31:24 AM »
I know I am going to get absolutely hammered for this suggestion by the more dedicated of this community but I will make it anyway:

One of the main issues I repeatedly have with playing SSM2007 is that I dont have enough time. Just going through all the button pressing takes an age and its actually the launch, in mission bits and landing that are the most interesting to me.

So I was wondering if you had considered allowing people to skip through all the button pressing intermediate parts and just concentrate on the take off, missions and landings? I suppose this would be almost like assuming you are the commander/payload specialist and do the important bits and your copilot does most of the other button pressing for you? This would enable a rapid gameplay and probably enable play through of a mission in a single night (2-3 hrs) and would include all the interesting bits.

I think this would potentially open up this sim to a heck of a lot more gamers and also would enable people like myself who have family and jobs to play the game during weekdays without dedicating 5 hrs to a single mission.

Considering most/all of the button pressing is pretty repetitive and methodical I am sure there will be people who would love to skip it. I know its the bulk of the gameplay for a lot of people on here, and I do enjoy it from time to time myself, but you know games should be playable by as wide an audience as possible, not just the dedicated gamers with lots of time on their hands (ie students). I don't see any downside to allowing this sort of gameplay. It would still be an incredibly serious simulation of the shuttle, but even in the real shuttle one person doesn't do everything....

You can already start missions in 2007 during various mission phases and this is without any saves in an existing game. You have "several hours from launch", just before launch, in orbit, descent and landing to choose from if I remember correctly.

The only thing you have to do is play the mission right from the start to be awarded with the mission patch.

I don't think that's too much to ask personally. I usually start a mission off, get to "on-orbit" procedures, take a save, and then come back to it when I have a little more time. Alas, gone are the days where I can sit down and play a mission through straight :(

... Unless I've completely missed your point? :)

I think he probably wants to be able to experience the launch preparations, the launch itself, and then the "setting up" of the shuttle in orbit (button pressing to prepare to open the bay doors, deployment of the KU antenna etc) automatically, rather than simply starting "in orbit" without the thrill of the ride!

Yes I want to experience the full mission but not all the repetitive button pressing every time. There are some really good bits in the missions like the rendezvous with the satellites, and the reentry phase, also the docking with the space station that I have yet to even do yet. Would be good to be able to 'fast forward' missions. It should be primarily a fun game you want to 'experience' rather than a test of endurance.

Is it possible for SSM2 to have an option to select data being displayed in metric units instead of imperial? It would make a big difference for me. But still, it would be an optional conversion. So imperial units can still be default setting and those who prefer them (or prefer strict close-to-reality simulation) wouldn't lose anything  :)
