"I wonder where Guenter Wendt?"

He's probably shaking the hands of the Apollo 1 crew, as well as the STS-51L and STS-107 crews now.

R.I.P. Guenter Wendt, the best pad leader NASA has ever had.

Rest-in-peace. I was taking a nap, and suddenly got a text through twitter saying he was dead. I just couldn't believe it... It just shows how old (Yet still young) our space program is.

Here's a really good and in-depth article about him: http://flametrench.flatoday.net/2010/05/legendary-pad-leader-guenter-wendt-dies.html

Truly a legend in his own right. May you now too soar with Eagles. Rest in peace.

Another sad moment. Pity he didn't live to see the last Shuttle flight...

May he rest in peace.

Ironically, the wife and I just (re) watched Apollo 13 (seen it 30 times now) on Sunday night and I commented to her about him last night ...

Definitely one of the most colorful characters to ever be part of the US space program.  We'll all miss him!
