Astronauts Resume Spacewalk After Tools Lost
18 November 2008 21:08

Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper has resumed work on SARJ cleanup and lubrication. At approx. 3:33 p.m. EST, Piper reported that one of the Braycote lubrication guns had released grease into her toolbag. As she was cleaning the bag and wiping the tools and equipment inside, the bag floated away. Another bag carrying identical equipment is now being shared by Piper and Bowen. EVA officers in Mission Control believe there is enough equipment for the spacewalkers to complete the planned SARJ trundle bearing assembly removal and race ring cleaning.

So there's now a bag full of equipment floating around in LEO? Well at least until its orbit decays enough for it to fall into atmo.

I can already "hear" the headlines.

and astronaut was injured today in orbit. during a space walk performed by the crew of Whateverthenameis. the astronaut was hit in the head by a bag containing what appears to be grease and wipes. ISA says the bag is presumably the bag lost in Nov 2008 aboard the old ISS. this will cause no delays in the scheduled flight to wherever.

STS78MEMBER, can you imagine how much time it takes to modify those tools to make them useable in cold hard vacuum of space though? $100k although steep seems to be a reasonable figure to me.

I'm surprised the press hasn't jumped all over this and created some kind of spin on it

NASA will probably land you in Guantánamo Bay before you can say "Finder's Keepers" ;)

Thy've lost tools before, wirecutters was the last one they lost, if memory serves me.

the reason those tools were so expensive...er($200,000).....is that they are all made completely of Titanium. I know someone who us to work on Launch Complex 39 said the workers have tools that they have used for years, and not even a scratch on them!

Perhaps we are faced with a alloy titanium-berilio (the berilio avoids the creation of sparks, very dangerous in certain circles). To me the cost of these tools seems absolutely reasonable, and in any case, better that a government spends so that in buying weapons.
